# What to Do When Your Garage Door Won't Open: A Troubleshooting Guide
Few things are more frustrating than being unable to get into, or out of, your garage. Before you panic or call for emergency service, there are several things you can check that might solve the problem quickly.
Before troubleshooting, ensure it's safe to work around your garage door. If you see broken springs, snapped cables, or any visible damage, do not attempt to operate the door. These issues require professional repair due to the dangerous tension in these components.
Also, if your door is partially open and appears to be jammed, don't try to force it closed. This could cause additional damage or injury.
Remote Batteries: It sounds obvious, but dead remote batteries are one of the most common causes of a "broken" garage door. Replace the batteries and try again.
Power Source: Check if your opener is plugged in and that the outlet has power. Test the outlet with another device. Also check your home's circuit breaker, a tripped breaker could be the culprit.
Lock Mode: Some openers have a lock or vacation mode that disables the remote. Check your wall-mounted control panel for a lock button or indicator light.
Look along the metal tracks on both sides of your door. Are they clear of debris? A small rock, piece of wood, or buildup of dirt can prevent the door from moving.
Check that the tracks are properly aligned. They should be parallel to each other and perpendicular to the ground. If they're bent or misaligned, this could be causing the problem.
Examine the rollers that run inside the tracks. If they're worn, chipped, or off-track, the door won't operate smoothly. While you can clean debris yourself, bent tracks and damaged rollers require professional repair.
Modern garage door openers have photo-eye safety sensors near the floor on either side of the door. These prevent the door from closing on people, pets, or objects.
Check if the sensors are properly aligned, each should have a small LED light. If one or both lights are off or blinking, the sensors may be misaligned or obstructed.
Clean the sensor lenses with a soft cloth and ensure nothing is blocking the invisible beam between them. Even spider webs can interfere with sensor function.
If you need to get your car out and the opener isn't working, you can operate the door manually. Look for a red cord hanging from the opener mechanism. Pulling this releases the door from the opener, allowing you to lift it by hand.
Note: Only use this when the door is fully closed. If the door is open and you pull the release, it may come crashing down if the springs are broken.
If the door is very heavy to lift manually, your springs may be broken or weakened. Do not attempt to use the door until the springs are inspected.
Access your opener's settings through the wall panel or app (for smart openers). Ensure the open/close limits are set correctly. If these limits are off, the door may stop short or reverse unexpectedly.
Also check the force settings. If the opener is set to detect resistance too sensitively, it may reverse even when nothing is blocking the door.
When you press the remote or wall button, what happens? - Nothing at all: Likely a power or receiver issue - Click but no movement: Motor or capacitor problem - Humming but no movement: Could be a stripped gear - Grinding noise: Track or roller obstruction - Straining sounds: Spring issues or obstruction
These sounds can help our technicians diagnose the problem more quickly when you call for service.
